Biographie

Fabricio Werdum’s rise to the upper echelon of UFC heavyweights is a testament to his hard work and resiliency in a career that spans more than a decade.

A three-time Brazilian jiu jitsu world champion, Werdum reached the pinnacle of MMA in November 2014 when he knocked out Mark Hunt at UFC 180 for the interim title – a victory that earned him the right to face champion Cain Velasquez for the heavyweight championship.

When UFC president Dana White wrapped the coveted title belt around Werdum’s waist, it made the Brazilian the fifth interim heavyweight champion in UFC history and the 10th Brazilian to become a UFC champion.

He certainly earned the accolades that come with the crown. Werdum’s 19-5-1 record includes wins over Gabriel Gonzaga, Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva, Roy Nelson and Hunt. Of his 19 victories, six have come by knockout and nine via submission.

His road to the top hasn’t been easy by any measure. Werdum, whose MMA career began in 2003, fought for Strikeforce and Pride and made his first appearance on a UFC card in 2007, losing Andrei Arlovski by unanimous decision.

But he recovered to capture nine of his next 11 bouts, earning a title shot against Velasquez in Mexico City at UFC 180. A knee injury forced Velasquez to bow out, but Werdum fought for the interim belt against the powerful and dangerous Hunt.

For a while, his hopes of a championship didn’t go well. Hunt knocked down Werdum in each of the first two rounds before Werdum fired an explosive right knee that caught his New Zealand opponent coming in. Hunt dropped to the canvas, and Werdum finished him with a barrage of punches.

Werdum, 37, is known for a strong ground game, but his striking makes him an all-around threat inside the Octagon. Interim or not, he’s a worthy champion.
