Biographie

TRAINING: I have complete changed everything up for this camp. My last fight I did zero strength & conditioning and zero stand-up mitt work. I was at ATT and we mainly focused on just sparring and live wrestling. I couldn't find the time to get everything I needed in. Now I have changed camps. I'm at MMA Masters and a lot has changed. I wake up early everyday to take my two-year-old and my five-month-old to my mom before I make the 45 minute drive to MMA Masters. There, we focus a lot on drilling and situational training that will get me prepared for Cole. I then take a small break and head to my S&C session that has taken my conditioning to new heights. I go there about three times a week. At night I'm either at Vagner Rocha Martial Arts sharpening my jiu-jitsu or hitting mitts with my boxing coach. I went from doing zero days of stand-up techniques and mitts to about four to five times a week. My focus this time around is to not make the same mistakes as last time. Of course, I find time for runs throughout the day in between all the training. My day usually ends at about 9:30-10pm.

When and why did you start training for fighting? I started training for fighting when I was 19 years old and went pro two years later at 21 years old

What ranks and titles have you held? I hold a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Bruno Malfacine and I held the Cage Warriors Fighting Championships Featherweight title

Do you have any heroes? Honestly, I have a lot of people that I look up to, but two unsung heroes that I have are my wife, Melisa and my Mom, Abby. Melisa has been my first and biggest fan, she is the one that urged me to take my first professional fight and has supported our dream every step of the way. We have been together since high school and she always brings out the best in me. She is also a great mother to our son, Anthony. My Mom worked hard and raised five children with my Dad. I thought she was super strict but I now understand that she taught me right from wrong. She and my Dad exhibited a great work ethic that has helped me to this day.
What does it mean for you to fight in the UFC? It's a dream come true. I have been chasing this dream for 10 years now. I don't just want to fight for the UFC. I want to be successful.

Did you go to college and if so what degree did you earn? I went to the University of Central Florida. I got my degree in elementary education.

What was your job before you started fighting? I've had all sorts of jobs from being a cart pusher at Walmart to teaching kindergarten and instructing kids in BJJ. I still work at a Behavioral Hospital and teach BJJ.

Specific accomplishments in amateur competition? Winner of the 2010 Abu Dhabi Pro Trial Black Belt Division

• Pro since 2008

• Has won nine of his last 11, (1 NC)

• Nine wins by submission (North-South choke, triangle armbar, Brabo, 4 RNC, guillotine, triangle) two by KO

• Six first round finishes

• Origin of nickname: “I am ‘The Beast’ for a few different reasons. One because the comic book character The Beast was the teacher of the X-Men and since I have my degree in elementary education and because of my epic beard that name kind of came to me. Also, because of my aggression in the Octagon. I can easily flip a switch from Jim Alers the instructor to Jim ‘The Beast’ Alers the fighter.”
